Poem - The life of a candle

"It's cold and dark momma. Why is it so dark?"
"Well sweetie...the four of us are candles. We're waiting for someone to light us"
"What happens then momma?"
"When we are lit we bring happiness and warmth and peace to those who look at us"

"Shush now, someone is coming to give us a light"
"I'm warm now momma …. It’s not dark anymore and the flame is so beautiful”
“I’m so happy momma. The flame makes my wax look transparent. I can see my reflection in the glass.”
“I know sweetie. I can see how bright and beautiful you are.”

“But why am I getting smaller momma? Why is my wax disappearing?
“I’m sorry sweetie…we’re candles…we give light and warmth but the flame burns us away.”
“But momma, what’s the point of being beautiful if we can’t live forever?”
“No one lives forever sweetie, but we bring joy and happiness. It’s the reason we’ve been made.”

“I want to live forever momma.”
“So do I sweetie but we can only live forever if no one lights us, but then we have no purpose.”
“It’s not fair momma! It’s really not fa….”
“I know sweetie… I kn….”
